American was an american manufacturer of cranes and hoists. The company was founded in 1882 as the Franklin Manufacturing Company by the gentlemen Frank Johnson and Oliver Crosby. In 1892 was the name changed to American Hoist & Derrick (short: AmHoist). American built the first mobile crane with a steam drive line on rail undercarriage. In 1923 was the first mobile crane on crawler chassis produced. In 1998 was American purchased by the Terex group.
