This fine and very interesting Liebherr LG 1550 was deployed by Sarens from Dordrecht (NL) for maintenance work on a wind turbine near Middenmeer (NL). It is a 550-ton crane from the year of manufacture 2003.

The crane is not finished in the original Sarens colours; it is a former crane of W&F Franke from Germany.

The X-shaped outrigger base measures 13 x 13 metres. These fine extensions are mounted to the outriggers, distributing the outrigger load over two feet.

The crane is mounted on an 8-axle carrier. The carrier is powered by a Liebherr D9408 TI-E, an 8-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 440 kW (598 hp). Axles 1, 2, 5 and 6 are driven.

For maintenance on the wind turbine, the rotor blades had to be removed. For this purpose, the crane was configured in SL3H configuration; the main boom has a length of 91 metres.

Unfortunately, wind speeds were too high on this day and the planned lifting operations could not take place.

The superstructure is equipped with two 14-ton hoist winches and a luffing winch for the main boom. A luffing winch for the luffing jib is installed in the foot section of the main boom. The superstructure is powered by a Liebherr D 9406 TI-E, a 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 300 kW (408 hp).

A total of 20 tonnes of ballast is mounted on the superstructure. The ballast consists of a 16-ton base plate, on which a total of sixteen 10-ton blocks and four 6-ton blocks are installed. The ballast has a slewing radius of 8.5 metres.

A few days later, the crane had already been dismantled and prepared for transport to the next job.

For road transport, the front outriggers are pressed into trays behind the cab. This not only prevents the outriggers from swinging out while driving, but also increases the rigidity of the carrier.

In transport condition, the crane is 17.91 metres long, 3 metres wide and 4 metres high. The transport weight is approximately 96 tonnes.

Axles 3, 4, 7 and 8 are equipped with twin tyres. A spare wheel is carried between the rear outriggers.

On to the next job! A very fine and distinctive crane from Sarens!
