Installation of bridges by Mammoet

In the summer of 2009, two heavy bridge decks were installed in Vleuten (NL). Here we see four large crane hooks with multiple reeving and heavy lifting equipment. This promises some impressive lifting work ahead!

The bridge decks were manufactured next to their final location and each weighs 450 tons. Using a double 10-axle Scheuerle SPMT, the first bridge deck is driven towards the cranes.

On the abutment, two Liebherr LTM 1500 cranes are set up with 135 tons of ballast.

On the lower road, two Demag AC 650 cranes are set up, both with 160 tons of ballast. Between the cranes, a temporary bridge has been installed, onto which the SPMT with the bridge deck partially drives.

Here is an overview of the construction site with the four heavy telescopic cranes.

Both AC 650 cranes are attached to a heavy lifting beam, hanging in both cranes and positioned under the bridge deck; they will lift the bridge deck from the SPMT shortly.

The two AC 650 cranes then carefully move the bridge deck towards the LTM 1500 cranes. The other end of the bridge deck still rests on the other SPMT module set, which slowly moves forward towards the temporary bridge.

The LTM 1500 cranes have extended their main booms to a length of 21.3 meters. The front AC 650 has extended its boom to a length of 35.5 meters, while the rear crane has only 20.5 meters of boom length. The AC 650 cranes have now brought the bridge deck within reach of the LTM 1500 cranes, which will take over the load.

The LTM 1500 cranes lift the left side of the bridge, while the right side is still supported by the axle lines of the SPMT. The AC 650 cranes will shortly lift the bridge deck from the SPMT. The rear AC 650 has now extended its main boom to 25.5 meters.

The 450-ton bridge deck is now suspended in all four cranes, and the second SPMT module set has moved away. Each crane is therefore lifting 112.5 tons of load, with the weight of the hook and rigging added on top.

The bridge deck is positioned onto the abutments by the four cranes.

A few hours later, the second bridge is lifted and installed in the same manner. Here, the rear section is already suspended in the LTM 1500 cranes.

A very impressive and remarkable lifting operation carried out by the specialists of Mammoet!
