Manitowoc 4100W - Lampson

This impressive Manitowoc 4100W of Lampson from Kennewick, Washington (US) was a couple of years ago used in the Netherlands. Here was the crane moored to a quay in Beverwijk (NL).

The crane was used on a salvage project by Titan Salvage for the coast of Egmond aan Zee (NL).

It is a 220 ton crane which is build from 1969 until the eigties.

At the rear of the counterweight is VICON written. VICON stands for Variable Indipendent CONtrol. VICON can be explained easy with help of text in the brochure:

"The exclusive Vicon control system enables stepless varible speed output from two controlled torgue converters, driven by a constant speed primary power plant. One converter drives the load hoist and travel machinery, the other the swing machinery. Torque and speed of all operating functions are varibly controlled from independent power sources, without slipping clutches or brakes."

The lower machinery is 21'1" wide and the upper machinery is 11' 3/4" wide.

The counterweight contains 5 pieces. Composed by 3 slobs (41,900 , 41,500 and 39000 lbs) in line with the upper machinery and two side counterweights of each 12,000 lbs. The full counterweight weights 146,000 lbs and has a 19'0" tail swing.

The gigantic gantry and backhitch.

The tracks are 26'6" long, 4'0" wide and 3' 3/4" height and weight about 38,405 lbs each. The driving is full mechanical with a big heavy chain which is driven from the lower machinery.

The official name is Manitowoc 4100W VICON Series-2. I don't know exact the mutual differences betwwen the series, altough the Series-1 does not have side and central counterweights.

On both sides is central carbody counterweight mounted between the tracks, 30,000 lbs each.

A detail of the big 6 sheave hook block.

The crane is fitted with a 130' main boom, the max. boom length is 260'.

The boom top is 40' long. At the tip is an extra sheave mounted for the whipline.

A view in the cab.

A view from above on the two winches.

The boom hoist is complete hidden in the upper machinery.

The power plant is a Cummins NTA-855 diesel with a power of 333 hp.

Lampson does not only rents cranes, but is also building them under the name "Transi-Lift".

The crane was loading some parts on the barge which will be used to salvage the "Vinca Gorthon", an operation that failed some years later.

In the background are with help of two Terex AC 700 cranes stilts hoisted for an other crane barge with a Manitowoc 60-Foot ringer crane from Titan Salvage itself.

A special guest in Holland!

In Europe a very rare crane, in the United States a very esteemed name.
